Dat 4. Tartu

The city of Tartu is the historic city of Estonia. It is the second largest city, which spoils the tourist with its magnificent architecture and cultural offerings, like cultural clubs as well as the first national theater and the first song festival. Also in Tartu, called the cradle of civilization, are some of the most popular buildings: The oldest university in Estonia, the Estonian Ministry of Education and the Estonian National Museum, and the oldest Estonian-language theater.  

Tartu is located in the central part of Estonia. An ancient residence in the city of Ihaste, representing Kundal culture in the city, may mean that Tartu's history goes back as far as 10,000 years. In the old Russian historical writings, Tartu was first mentioned in 1030, when the armies of Jaroslav the Wise conquered the city. According to these written sources, Tartu is the oldest city in the Baltic States.  

There are several historically significant churches in the city: the city has a unique example of medieval church architecture in northern Europe.
